Gravity Separation Case Study: Removing Sand from Charcoal in South Africa

Project Overview

Located in a coal processing facility in South Africa, this project aimed to enhance the purity of charcoal by eliminating the significant amounts of sand and mud mixed in with raw materials. To ensure that the final product meets international carbon purity standards, the plant adopted a charcoal sand removal system based on gravity separation equipment.

This solution not only boosts the quality of the final coal product but also supports eco-friendly and energy-efficient operations. For more insights into similar applications, visit our

Separation Process

The adopted charcoal sand separation method leverages the density difference between coal and silica sand to achieve high separation efficiency. The process involves several key machines working in a continuous, automated flow:

    • Linear vibrating screen for initial material classification

    • Spiral chute for separating fine coal particles from fine sand

    • Jig separator for coarse particle gravity separation

    • Dewatering screen to reduce moisture before final packaging

Each piece of equipment contributes to a streamlined, low-noise, and low-maintenance operation. This gravity separation process is highly suitable for plants looking to optimize throughput and carbon quality at minimal operational cost. For more detail on the working principles, check out our
